Guide for parents
It can be very daunting to find the right music lessons for your child! Especially if you’re not musical yourself, so we’ve put together a guide through our different kind of lessons, and how to get the most out of your lessons, depending on your child’s goals and personality.
We’ve got a guide for choosing what type of lesson will suit you, and how to choose an instrument.
The first step is what type of learning process will suit your child, ‘learning for fun’ or ‘learning for mastery’.
Learning for fun
Recommendation: Group lessons
Lessons are focused on having fun with music and experimentation. Your child will learn the basic building blocks of music through games and hands on activities. These lessons have less expectation for homework music theory, letting kids have fun with the process of learning music. Most young kids start off with learning for fun and change to learning for mastery once they complete a few levels of music or once they’re a bit more mature.
Student expectations: 1-2 practice sessions at home between lessons
Recommendation: Group or Private lessons for beginners. Private and band classes for intermediate and advanced.
For students who are serious about learning music and quickly developing their skills. You child will learn the why and how of music theory as they develop their technical skills. Students will also have the chance to sit exams and are encouraged to participate in bands and workshops to level up their skills.
Student expectations: 4-5 practice sessions at home between lessons. Attending recitals and performances.
Learning for mastery
Private lessons
One on one lessons with a teacher, we tailor these lessons specially for each student, so your teacher will prepare each lesson depending on student skills, amount of practice, and particular goals.
These lessons are recommended for students who want to quickly master their instrument, intermediate to advanced students, those who get easily distracted in a group, or who have special needs. Teens and adults may also want to learn privately instead of in a group.
Group instrument lessons
Group lessons with a max of 5 students. These small groups still give us a lot of flexibility to tailor the lessons to each student while still teaching as a class. Our lessons are designed with different skill levels in mind, so all students can be working on the same song and skills, but kids who want to push themselves can do extra challenges, while kids who want to have fun can still keep up and play in the group.
These are ideal for beginners, kids who want to have fun and play music with their friends, and young kids.
Bands
Bands are for kids to have fun and see what its like to play with other instruments! Great for private students to get a chance to play with other musicians, and great fun for group lesson students to see how different instruments work together.
These classes are designed to be taken along with a students usual instrument lessons and spaces are limited for certain instruments.
What instrument is right for my child?
If your child has shown interest in a particular instrument, we recommend starting with that, a child will be more interested and more likely to practice if its an instrument that they have chosen or are drawn to. If they’re not sure what to try we’ve got some recommendations below.
For young kids aged 5-6, the piano or ukulele will be easiest for little hands and fingers, or think about what music they like to listen to, is there a particular instrument that stands out the most? The piano is a great all rounder instrument suitable for most kids, and teaches lots of music fundamentals that can be transferred to other instruments.
Kids 7-8 and up generally are ready to try any instrument, and are more likely to be drawn to one based on that the listen to. They can also come in for a trial on multiple instruments and choose once they’ve had a go!
